Studio Ebur

Founded in 2020 by the duo Racha Gutierrez and Dahlia Hojeij Deleuze, Ebur is a creative studio whose favorite disciplines revolve around space and what composes it. Sharing a very close sensibility, common values and a desire to create together, the association of the two childhood friends became obvious during their architecture studies in Paris. The Ebur universe is built through different eras, cultures and savoir-faires to create places, furniture, singular and timeless objects, in a responsible approach and a privileged relationship with craftsmen. The Ebur spaces, volumes and lines are inspired by multiple influences from both traditional craftsmanship and major artistic trends. We can find in their editions African and Oriental influences through the symbols and materialities of the collections, on an aesthetic inspired by the French and Italian decorative arts of the first half of the twentieth century. This palimpsest defines the Ebur universe and is perpetually enriched.

Overview:

Studio Background: Founded in 2020

Studio Ebur was born from the shared vision of Racha Gutierrez and Dahlia Hojeij Deleuze. Having grown up together in Ivory Coast and studied architecture in Paris, the duo quickly realized their complementary approach to design.

Their work spans architecture, furniture, and scenography, creating spaces and objects with a strong narrative and deep cultural resonance. Their first furniture collection, Le bruit de la mer, launched in 2023, embodies their love for coastal landscapes and artisanal craftsmanship.

Founders: Racha Gutierrez and Dahlia Hojeij Deleuze

Approach, design philosophy: Personal memories, historical influences, and craftsmanship

Studio Ebur draws inspiration from personal memories, historical influences, and craftsmanship. Their work reflects a "palimpsest" of cultures, merging past and present aesthetics. "Growing up in Ivory Coast gave us a very different approach to craftsmanship," they explain, highlighting how their background shaped their appreciation for artisanal work. (Source : Ideat) Their process involves continuous experimentation with forms, textures, and materials to create evocative, timeless pieces.

Style: Curved silhouettes and textured surfaces

Studio Ebur’s aesthetic is deeply rooted in African and Mediterranean influences. Their work is characterized by curved silhouettes, textured surfaces, and a mix of raw and refined materials. Their interiors and objects often have an air of nostalgia while remaining resolutely modern.

Main inspirations: The Mediterranean coastline

  • The Ivory Coast and its open, accessible approach to craftsmanship.

  • The Mediterranean coastline and its interplay of light, color, and organic forms.

  • Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, Serge Roche, and Jean Dunand.

  • The Wiener Werkstätte movement and designers such as Carlo Bugatti and Josef Hoffmann.

  • "We were lulled by the sound of the sea during our weekends in Ivory Coast and our vacations in the Mediterranean," reflecting how the sea influences their aesthetic. (Source : BlogEspritDesign)

Identity and aesthetics: Aseamless blend of influences

The identity of Studio Ebur is defined by a seamless blend of influences. Their pieces feel like they belong to multiple time periods at once, with historical references subtly woven into contemporary forms. “Working with materials is very important to us,” they emphasize, underscoring their hands-on approach to material exploration.  (Source : Ideat)

Values: Craftsmanship, sustainability, and a deep connection to heritage

The studio values craftsmanship, sustainability, and a deep connection to heritage. Their work is an homage to the artisans who bring their designs to life. Whether working with wood, metal, or ceramics, they prioritize responsible production methods and authentic techniques.

Creative process: Storytelling

Studio Ebur's creative process is rooted in storytelling. They begin with an emotion, a memory, or an atmosphere, which they translate into form. Their process is iterative, allowing for unexpected discoveries along the way. “We're committed to constant experimentation,” they say, highlighting their openness to new techniques and materials. Production and materials:

The studio works with a range of natural and crafted materials, including:

  • Wood (for furniture and decorative elements).

  • Forged iron (used for structural and decorative designs).

  • Stoneware and ceramics (for lighting and accessories).

  • Textiles such as raw silk and woven fibers. Their pieces are produced in small workshops in Portugal, Italy, France, and Lebanon, chosen for their expertise in specific crafts.

Production methods:

Studio Ebur collaborates closely with artisans, ensuring each piece is crafted with care. Many of their furniture designs are made to order, preserving an artisanal quality. Their Lebanese-made marquetry, for example, reflects traditional woodworking techniques adapted to contemporary aesthetics.
